VR mock-up for interactive simulation of maintenance on the ITER Neutral Beam Injection System

In December 2017, Heemskerk Innovative Technology started on a new assignment from Wood: to create a virtual mock-up to support the remote handling compatibility analysis for the Exit Scraper, a replaceable part of the ITER Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) system.

In the project, we focus on hoisting the Exit Scraper in and out of the NB vessel and transferring it inside the Neutral Beam cell to/from the ITER Hot Cell facility.

The work is being undertaken as part of WOOD’s framework contract F4E-OMF-340-3-01 for the in-kind procurement of the Neutral Beam Remote Handling System (NBRHS), signed with Fusion for Energy (F4E), which is the European organisation managing Europe’s contribution to ITER- the biggest scientific experiment demonstrating the feasibility of fusion energy/power.

Wood, a global leader in the delivery of project, engineering and technical services to energy and industrial markets, is the UK’s largest industry contributor to ITER, the world’s largest nuclear fusion project.

Wood leads the European Remote Handling Alliance, which is responsible for the development and delivery of the Neutral Beam Cell Remote Handling System on the ITER fusion reactor under a seven-year, €70m framework contract awarded by Fusion For Energy (F4E), a European Union organisation which is responsible for Europe’s contribution to ITER.
